My last stop in Myanmar surprised me so much. My travel fatigue was blasted away by Yangon in an instant. The city bursts many colonial style buildings and sometimes feels like Budapest or Barcelona when I strolled through the alleys and streets.
The rollercoaster ride of my emotions culminated in a 14Km day long stroll of the city. I visited many of the cities art galleries to freshen my inspiration. A nice lunch and some hours later I came across what I was secretly hoping to discover the whole day.
The military junta opened a theme park to the public in 1997 which 20 years later lies derelict next to the Yangon Zoo. Entering was not as difficult as I expected it to be. Memories of the Plänterwald in Berlin sprung up as I wandered the 10-acre space. This sparked my attention again.
Despite the unusual environment people are really living inside this place. Similar to the cowboys in the western town of Plänterwald the shopkeepers in this hidden gem never left. When I climbed the first elevation of the abandoned rollercoaster kids came up as well waving at me and laughing about the additional pole on top of the tracks.
