After a night under the brightest stars on a camping spot at the shore of upper Campbell Lake I went swimming in the lake at the morning to wake me up. A freezing body wash and a reheating coffee later i was following a recommendation of a forum user on a travel website. I took the road from Gold River to Woss on my way to Telegraph Cove on the North-East shore of Vancouver Island. The road turned to a gravel road pretty soon after I left Gold River. The 63 Kilometer of shaky and uneven road put my concentration and the suspension of Theodor (the name of the van) to a test.
A few kilometers into it this suddenly changed and driving the off road felt like a real pleasure. These must be the roads that rally drivers and 4WD enthusiasts alike are looking for. The family style van that a Grand Caravan is did not withstand my demands of going true rally style. But I arrived to my final destination.
As the synapsis of travel have not yet fully adopted from backpacking to vanlife I encountered a threatening situation as well. After coming off the gravel road I went to the petrol station in Woss. I bought some cup noodles and ate them in the sun behind the station. Of course I forgot my bag holding all my cash, credit cards, passport and also my wallet with back up credit cards and ID next to it. But I am such a lucky one. Even when I did return from Telegraph Cove after 2 hours my things were still there. The dinner with freshly grilled salmon in the Killer Whale Cafe after I returned once more was one of the best fish meals I ever had in my life. Because I could pay for it and also because the salmon up here is otherworldly.
