Volcano love: Summiting Acatenango as a last bastion

My trip comes close to the end already. Things turned out a little different than they were expected to. Yesterday I was summiting Acatenango. But let’s get back to where this started. While I was travelling through Canada I received a phone call that would change the outcome of this trip dramatically. The original plan to travel until the first weeks of January 2018 were abandoned and replaced by a different schedule.

My employer L-mobile has recently opened a branch in Tunisia to expand our development department. This branch has been growing through the last months and came to a point where it would make sense to add an experienced employee to further catalyse the growth. The phone call I received contained the opportunity for me to fulfil this position and I happily accepted it.

This means I will go back to Germany for a short period in October before heading out to Nabeul in Tunisia for the next months. My next flight is leaving Guatemala City on October 3rd to Cancun from where I will continue on October 5th to Frankfurt Germany. Before this next summit is conquered I had another one right in front of me: Acatenango at 3.976 meters elevation.

We booked a tour with a tour operator that was highly recommended by other travelers and the money we paid seems to support the local economy. So if you go to hike on Acatenango give it a shot.

These guys take you up to the summit of the dormant Acatenango to see the active Fuego and dormant Agua volcanoes. I found our tour to be well organised with reliable and responsible guides and a good base-camp to sleep in before summiting the next morning.

Summiting Acatenango – the turning point

The sight of an active volcano speaks for itself. Certainly one of the most impressive sights during this trip. Climbing the 1.600 meters in elevation was strenuous due to the low air pressure and oxygen levels on the top. But it was totally worth it. Wear warm clothes on the top as the morning sun doesn’t really warm and luckily the lava is too far away to benefit from.
