May Day Stadium

With an official capacity of 150.000 seats the Rungnado May Day Stadium is the largest stadium in the world. We had to come back to this place twice as we weren’t on time for our first appointment. Being 5 minutes late meant our guide had already left. The stadium despite being obviously empty and unoccupied that day wasn’t able to be visited at that time. We had to pay our respect and a little “Handgeld” to the official watching over the premises to negotiate a second visit later that day.

The largest stadium in the world

When we came back in the afternoon we were greated by a wonderful and funny official guide that showed us around. The stadium impressed by it’s size and another interesting fact. The rooms that lie beyond the visitors area are meant to hold officials and journalists during any events that would eventually take place at this monstrous structure, When we entered the room that would hold journalists I asked our guide where these people would plug their electronic devices as there were no power outlets in the room. It will be installed when it’s time was her frantic response.

We were proudly confronted with the room were the coaches of the teams would discuss their strategy. A whiteboard with magnetic dots in perfect table soccer alignment should have convinced us that this was about to happen.

All the rooms we were brought to were in pristine condition. No cracks, marks or anything that would have shown any sign of serious activity. That was the only moment were I felt everything was so sarcastically staged that I couldn’t withhold a deep and gleeful laughter.
