Discover Stuttgart with a camera and a good friend

When I came to Stuttgart a few weeks ago an old friend of mine called and asked if I would be up to discover Stuttgart and night time photography. After a few quick beers and some long outstanding updates about our current realities we headed off into the night.

Discover Stuttgart at night

I wasn’t expecting much as my photographic attitude has vanished quite a bit after returning from the world trip. However, I found some nice highlights of Stuttgart and was able to score some shots even without a tripod. As always, this post has been sitting around on my hard drive way too long. For the record I will share some interesting articles I’ve come across lately and try not to let another month pass before posting the next update.

Until then I would like to share some of the reads or stories I’ve enjoyed over the last 2 months.

Articles or books I found interesting over the last month

Derek Sivers – Moving for good

This article reflects many of my core beliefs for life. I do believe in the power of experience and independence to move on whenever I feel like it. On the other hand I think the advice to immerse yourself into new situations is one of the best tips out there for every human. Living in different environments and conditions never fails to surprise me.

Rolf Dobelli – News Diät (english version here)

Another very good article. I like it because it interacts nicely with this article at Mr. Money Mustache – How Big is your Circle of Control. Having a very strict way of information intake can make your circle of concern much more focused and help you find things that you’re able to influence in the end. The article had an impact on my interaction with applications like facebook or instagram. I was able to short-cut all news sites for 2 months now. I was trying Perspective Daily for the free trial period but resorted to the Wikipedia featured articles of today for my easy reads.

Esther Perel – The secret to desire in long-term relationships

I have been in long-term relationships for subsequent periods of around 5-8 years in my life. I found Esther Perel to nail some of the challenges on the head. When she explains the shift in desire and attraction it made me listen twice. Some of the implicit knowledge you build just got framed in the right way.

Eric Metaxas – Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy

My interest in religion over the last months has been inspired from various sources. Be it Buddhism, Islam or Christianity I found the aspect of beliefs and rituals a great source of questions and surprise. I guess many German protestant believers have heard about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. I didn’t know about him and found the biography by Eric Metaxas a very intense read. A life dedicated to a single cause.

Han Kang – The vegetarian

I listen to audio-books when I come home and prepare food for myself. After dinner I take time to listen to them while exercising or as a leisure period before heading to bed. The vegetarian by Han Kang is a strange story at times. A girl becoming vegetarian in Korean society that will lead to an ultimate mess and a great tragedy. I liked the the way the story is told and how the different actors are placed into perspective. To hear about the powerlessness and conflicts her decision would impose on her whole environment made me shiver at times.

Guenter Faltin – Brains vs. capital

This book is all about entrepreneurship. Thought provoking and simple it describes a way of building companies based on concepts over huge investments. Guenter Faltin seems like the type of person you’d want to meet on a lengthy train ride over a few good cups of tea.
